What good communication should look like during your renovation

You shouldn’t have to chase your builder to find out what’s happening in your own home.

Poor communication can turn a manageable decision into a stressful one. When you don’t know what happens next, whether a selection is overdue or why progress has changed, it’s difficult to feel confident about the build.

Good communication starts before construction, with clear expectations about who will keep you informed and how.

Establish your points of contact

Ask who handles day-to-day enquiries, who manages construction and who can explain a price or scope change.

A building project involves several people. That’s normal. The problem is not having a team; it’s not knowing who is responsible for answering your question.

Agree on useful updates

A useful update should tell you more than “everything is going well”. It should help you understand:

  • What has been completed.
  • What is planned next.
  • Which decisions are needed from you.
  • Whether anything may affect cost or timing.

At All Leonard Build, our communication approach includes weekly updates, confirmations, reminders and follow-ups. The aim is to keep you informed without making you responsible for coordinating the build.

Keep important decisions in writing

Conversations are valuable, but important details need a written record.

If you discuss a change, ask for confirmation of the scope, cost and any timing implications. This gives everyone the same information to work from and reduces the chance of misunderstandings later.

Once your contract is signed, All Leonard Build’s client portal provides a place to track the job, view invoices and review variations.

Raise questions early

You don’t need to wait until a concern becomes a major problem. If something is unclear, ask while there is still time to explain it or consider the options.

A straightforward question such as “What does this mean for the next stage?” can make a big difference to your confidence.

The takeaway: good communication gives you visibility and a clear next step, not just reassurance.
